We'd be delighted to accept donations in any amount, as Historyforkids! is still on a very rocky financial footing, despite the advertising. Here's a breakdown of our budget issues, and a wish list:
Currently all of our labor is volunteer. Mostly it's me (Karen Carr) who volunteers, though others have also chipped in from time to time. Our only costs therefore are for webhosting services. But with our current traffic, our webhosting costs $150 a month, every month. This cost is just about covered by our advertising.
We would like to undertake some new projects that would make this website much better and more useful, but we'd need more money.
First, we'd like to beef up the sections on China, India, and Africa. I'd need to hire somebody. I think it could be done for about $6000 per geographic area (as I would have to hire different people for each area). Or, if you're an expert in any of these areas and would be willing to write for us, we'd be happy with that too.
Second, we'd like to ask experts in various fields to read over our material for accuracy, and to make suggestions about recent developments in their fields of which we might not be aware. But we'd have to pay them an honorarium of a few hundred dollars each. I think peer-reviewing the entire site would cost about $10,000. Or, again, if you're an expert and would like to peer-review a section, we'd be happy to hear from you.
Third, we'd like to hire a real web designer to make the site easier to navigate and more elegant in general. This would also result in quicker serving of pages. (Right now I do all the coding myself too). We wouldn't have to hire him or her permanently, but just to do one big revision. I think $5000 would probably do it. Or, if you happen to be a real web designer with time on your hands, please get in touch!
If you can make any contribution towards any of these goals (or different goals of your own), we'd be so happy! We are currently applying for non-profit status; when we get it, your gifts will be tax-deductible as well.
