Pisa - the Baptistry

Pisa Baptistry

This is where people were baptized in medieval Pisa, in Italy. The round baptistry you see in the picture was built in the Romanesque style around 1150 AD. So the lower levels have round arches. But by the time they finished building the upper part, people were changing over to the Gothic style, and the upper windows were made with pointed arches.

The outside is covered with white marble. It's just across from the earlier Cathedral and the famous leaning tower.

You might want to compare this baptistry to the baptistry in Florence, very close by, which was built just a little earlier.
