Apollodorus built Trajan's shopping mall out of brick and concrete, like Domitian's palace that had just been built a few years earlier. But it wouldn't have looked like this when it was new: the brick would have been covered with marble facing and stucco. You can still see the holes where the marble facing was stolen away later.

Some of the stores were outside, facing onto streets paved with big basalt paving stones.
