Troy for Kids

Troy VII

After the big earthquake destroyed Troy VI about 1250 BC, the same people rebuilt their city as Troy VII, on the ruins of Troy VI. This city - Troy VII - was the one that the Greeks would have attacked during the Trojan War.

Archaeologists disagree about what Troy VII was like. Some people think that Troy VII was a much smaller, poorer city than Troy VI. But recent excavations outside the walls of Troy VII seem to show that a lot of people were living outside the walls, and maybe Troy VII was a pretty big town after all.

In Search of Troy : One man's quest for Homer's fabled city, by Giovanni Caselli (2001). For kids. Tells about how Schliemann found the site, and also shows reconstructions of the buildings that he found. Sometimes rather over-optimistic.

Troy and Knossos (Digging Up the Past), by Peter Hicks (1997). For kids.

In Search of the Trojan War, by Michael Wood (1998). For adults, written to go with a PBS series.
