Parents' Corner
Hi! Welcome to History for Kids! You're an important part of your child's education, and if we can help you help your child learn, we will.
Tips for how to use this site:
A lot of parents come here because they are homeschooling their children.
If that's your situation, welcome! and please let
us know if you aren't finding what you are looking for. We'd be
happy to recommend books that are available and appropriate for your
children. It helps if you tell us the names of the nearest libraries
- often I can search the library catalogue of your local library and
find what is available for you. But don't forget that I can only give
a limited amount of information here. To really find out about something,
books are still the best way.
In addition to reading the material, your children will benefit from
discussing it with you - ask them what they found most interesting
about a certain page, or what the differences were between two time
periods, or how the war started. The craft
projects also help to keep kids engaged. Most of the lesson
plans I suggest for the teachers are also appropriate for homeschoolers,
though some depend on having a lot of kids around.
Other parents come here because they are helping their children with
homework. That's great too! This site will work well for short reports,
but for a more in-depth effort, this site will not by itself provide enough detail for
a good report. You should also look at books - we suggest some at the bottom of
most pages. You might want to also be careful to
check that they are not just copying the text of the page into their
report. Chances are their teacher knows about this site, or can find
it easily if the writing doesn't sound like your child.
Or you may be looking for gifts or resources for your children - Christmas
or Hanukah presents, birthday presents, or just something to answer
their questions or get them interested in the past. We try to provide
good suggestions at reasonable prices.
Our direct links to Amazon are always books we have checked out ourselves,
mostly with our own children. We have found them to be accurate, clear,
and interesting. If you have suggestions of books your child liked,
we'd always be glad to hear about them!
(Note: We don't always suggest non-fiction. The main thing is for
kids to become interested in history, and if that happens through
reading good historical fiction, we think that's fine).
We've got a new no-ads version of the site - if you'd rather spare your kid the
ads (I know they're annoying, but it costs money to send you these pages!) you
can get the no-ads version instantly by sending us 99 cents through Paypal. Your
password is good for a week. Just click below to go right to Paypal.
